What is Heartburn?

Mild and occasional heartburn is fairly common, but more frequent heartburn or more severe symptoms generally result in a diagnosis of GERD or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. While more definitive tests can confirm the diagnosis and assess damage to the esophagus, the initial diagnosis is usually based on the patient's history including the frequency and severity of heartburn and other related symptoms. GERD is as common in women as in men. There are several definitions of GERD but the most common one is "Symptoms and or tissue injury resulting from the reflux of gastric (stomach) contents into the esophagus" (American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy).

The Cause

The leading theory on the cause of chronic heartburn, or GERD, is that lower esophageal sphincter muscles (that normally provide a barrier between your stomach and esophagus) are weaker in GERD patients and that these muscles relax spontaneously in GERD patients allowing stomach contents to escape into the esophagus. The phenomenon has been termed "transient relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter" or TRLES. This theory is widely accepted as the underlying cause of GERD. In my book, I reject this concept and provide evidence for my own well researched theory that gas produced by microorganisms in our intestinal tract is the true cause of GERD and by using the glycemic index approach we can prevent the microbes from producing heartburn-causing gas.
